Division Team Opposition Result Match Report
BHL 1 QUT 1 United L 2-4 TV Game

Goalscorers: Chris “Package” Rawlings and Lyndon “Princess” Evans

Div 1 played with some strong intensity and were winning 1-0 at half time. Feel asleep for 10 minutes and let United back in, ended up losing 4-2. Some strong signs of recovery for the boys.

BHL 2 QUT 2 United L 1-4 A dominant first half controlling the ball and territory saw the QUT Men camped in the attacking half, unfortunately a lack of composure and inability to capitalise on corners saw them go into the break only 1 nil up. Some changes in player personnel and a lack of fitness saw United begin to get back into the game getting more possession and time in the QUT half. Eventually the amount of time and possession resulted in some quick goals for United. As the game wore on, United saw a tired and disinterested QUT and moved in for the kill – eventually running out 4-1 winners over QUT. A more tougher and determined effort for the full 70 minutes is required from the boys if they want to challenge for a finals spot in 2010.
BHL 3 QUT 3 SWU  L 2-7 A scrappy affair in the first half saw an arm wrestle for control between two strong teams. Constant turnovers and poor decision making in the QUT defensive half saw the deadlock broke mid way through the first half with two own goals by QUT. Heads dropped and South West assumed control of the game dictating terms and scored a third before the half time break from a turnover due to a controversial decision.  The second half saw the boys come determined and playing with purpose, controlling the ball and building up some nice phases of possession to earn 10 second half penalty corners and a diving field goal to the Captain Daniel Friend. Continued attacking pressure was applied by QUT as they tried to get back into the game, but a lack of defensive pressure from turnovers saw South West get some more goals back. A late consolation goal from a Daniel Friend penalty corner saw QUT lose 7-2.  After losing the last two weeks by a combined score of 12-2, the boys have slipped down the ladder several spots and are in serious danger of missing the finals after a strong early start to the season ( now 3 wins and 5 losses ). A hard week of training is needed to get the boys back on track.
BHL 4 QUT 4 Kedron Wavell L 0-3 The team went up against Kedron Wavell this weekend and played an exceptional game but on the day Kedron just had the upper hand. The game started at a frantic pace which more resembled a game of force and back rather than hockey. As the game pace slowed QUT looked to hold Kedron out of our own 25. Almost continuous pressure and some stunning defence from Pony kept the scores locked at 0-0 until a dubious goal broke the deadlock with 5 minutes till the half. The linkages and working the ball out of defence had Kedron on the back foot for the rest of the half.  The second half saw a drop in intensity and lapses in defence but again goal keeper Pony made tremendous diving saves to keep the score at 1-0. A strong middle period by the team and excellent linkages up the field gave the team many shots on goal but we were unable to convert shots into goals. Kedron scored two more goals before the end of the game. There is a lot we can take away from that game and that win will come if we continue to build on the incredible improvement that this team has displayed.

Division Team Opposition Result Match Report
BHL 1 QUT 1 UQ L 0-4 Ben Napier-Munn Memorial Shield Game
BHL 2 QUT 2 UQ L 0-6 Div 2 went down 6-0 to Uni.  It is fair to concede that we were beaten by a better side, probably the fastest, fittest and most skillful outfit we have come up against this season.  Having said that, they still put their socks on one leg at a time, just like everyone else and we should have produced a more determined first 15 minutes than we did.  The game was lost in that short early period, when it appeared the Ibis were not physically warm or mentally tuned in.  2 goals within the first 5 minutes set the tone and allowed Uni to play confident, fearless hockey, where every pass they threw stuck and every jab of the stick produced a turn-over.  3-0 down at half-time the instructions were clear, lead to the ball, secure it and find a short pass.  This seemed to equalize the possession imbalance, but we were still impotent in attack.  The boys didn’t give up, but our confidence had never recovered from the brutal assault of the first 15.  Another lesson learned – mental preparation is as important as a physical warm-up.
BHL 3 QUT 3 UQ 3.1 L 0-5
BHL 4 QUT 4 UQ L 1-5 The match started off at a typical fast pace which UQ struggled to keep up as QUT dominated the first 5 minutes. Sadly a goal against the run of play put the team down 1-0. It went from bad to worse as UQ regained composure and ran the half and backline ragged as they ran in 3 more goals before the half, something that should be forgotten as UQ strikers were left unmarked and tackling became sloppy from the team.  After a heated half time discussion QUT retook the field and set out to put some goals on the board. Ten minutes in saw a fantastic goal from Rob Knock that put QUT on the board for only the second time this season. The game was evenly matched from there as QUT and UQ traded blows inside the opposing half. An officious referee saw Rob Knock and John Campbell receive the salad and Mal Grant to pick up the coveted cheese (fines have been given!). One man down QUT struggled under the UQ attack as they switched it from side to side. The final score ending up 5-1 to UQ. A disappointing end to the game after an encouraging opening.  That’s the report for this week. I really hope we win soon!

ROUND 6 – Sat 8 & Sun 9 May 2010

Division Team Opposition Result Match Report
BHL 1 QUT 1 Bulimba  L1-4  Goalscorer: Alex Short
BHL 2 QUT 2 Bulimba D 2-2 A 2-2 draw against the Bulls was the result for the Division 2 men, but it truly was the fish that got away.  After dominating the first half, with a foundation built on solid defence and an accurate short game, orchestrated by Alex Krzensk – QUT could only manage a 1-0 lead at the break, courtesy of a Mick Beaumont corner strike.  After half-time instructions about lifting the intensity and capitalizing on a wealth of possession, things seemed to go to plan with some enterprising passing leading to a reverse stick goal to Lyndon Evans.  At 2-0 up and 20 minutes to go, a big win was there for the taking, but in some sort of David Copperfield like act – the QUT who had dominated proceedings vanished and were replaced by a lethargic and uninspired outfit who let Bulimba back into the game with 2 very soft goals.  Despite the crowd and the bench trying to lift the intensity – the momentum shift could not be overcome and we limped home to the draw.  It was a priceless lesson in the danger of mental lapses and the value in fitness and capitalizing on opportunities when you have them.  Hopefully this provides the motivation to want blood against University this weekend.
BHL 3 QUT 3 Norths W 4-2 QUT went into this Match needing some points to stay in touch for Finals contention with the Competition leaders. A slow start saw Norths gain the early lead after repeated turnovers from the QUT midfield. This seemed to waken the Ibis from their drunken slumber as they started to take control of the midfield and dominate territory and possession through hard running and great team passing. These hard efforts were rewarded with 3 quick goals in under 10 minutes as the Ibis stamped their authority on the game leading up to half time.
The Second Half saw QUT start the same as the first half and continuously turned the ball over in their own half, they were lucky that a great defensive effort from fill in Goal Keeper, Justin Tracey, and poor finishing from Norths allowed QUT to keep their lead. A second goal to Norths near the end of the game saw a frantic last ditch effort from them to share the points with a draw. However, the result was put beyond any doubt when the Captain finished of another good team effort of passing and receiving in the lead up to score from the backline. Final score 4-2 and the boys move up to 5th place.
Best QUT players : Justin Tracey, Marcus Godwin, Daniel Friend
Goal Scorers : Marcus Godwin 2, Phil Harney 1 and Daniel Friend 1.
BHL 4 QUT 4 Bulimba L 0-3 After a weeks break the team was ready to hunt for that elusive first victory. QUT started strong with good ball possession and quick one-two passes through the centre had Bulimba struggling to keep up with the hard and fast attack. Unfortunately a substitution mix up, after a Bulimba long-hit saw the opposition run in an easy goal past the teams new keeper Justin Tracey. QUT from then on struggled to regain composure as Bulimba slowed the play and controlled the match and the crucial centre of the field. The second half saw, what has been coined, ’second-half death’ as the team struggled to lift the intensity in the second half. A skilful short corner from Bulimba allowed them to slot another goal in. Mid way through QUT regained its composure as the oppositions insides, left big gaps which QUT punched through several times with the help of centre half Mal Grant. QUT had several opportunities upfront but were unable to capitalise. The end score being 3-0 to Bulimba. Division 4 can take a lot away from that game but converting short corners and break away plays is a crucial part that is lacking. The team looks forward to the UQ vs. QUT showdown next week in an effort to gain that first win.

ROUND 3 – Sat 10 & Sun 11 April 2010

Division Game Result Match Report
BHL 1 QUT 1 v Valleys L 0-2 The boys took on Valleys in what felt like mid-summer conditions and with only 9 “fresh legs” it was always going to be a stuggle. QUT did well in the first half, defending well and creating some opportunity up the front keeping scores to nil all. In the second half the fatigue and heat set in and Valley breached the defensive walls despite the fabulous efforts of keeper Blair. The final score was 2-0. HUGE thanks to Hank, Princess, Mick Lehman & Phil Harney for backing up from twos.
BHL 2 QUT 2 v Valleys W 3-2 ?
BHL 3 QUT 3 v Kedron-Wavell W 5-3 ?
BHL 4 QUT 4 v Valley L 1-3 Division 4 started strongly against the top placed Valley side and with a long pass down to Andrew Mount in the third minute allowed QUT to score the first goal of the match and the season. Heads were still high when Valleys responded with their own goal in the 10th minute. Josh Spicer made some spectacular saves in the net to keep the score low. 2 Yellow cards in the first half allowed Valleys to put another goal on the board as the defence was having trouble marking the loose men. QUT went into the half 2-1 down..
The second half was not as structured as the first (the same with the opposition) as both teams struggled under the intense heat. An unmarked man in the circle (coupled with the allowance of tomahawk hits) gave Valley one more goal to seal the game. QUT didn’t stop there as the Valley defence scrambled to slow the QUT attack. Unfortunately QUT could not convert the shots on goal with the end score remaining at 3-1. Again simple things let us down such as communication and marking. Some positives to take away from the game are the short passes are getting much stronger and our attack is starting to put some much needed pressure on the opposition.
So there it is, see you on Thursday.

ROUND 2 – Sat 27 & Sun 28 March 2010

Division Game Result Match Report
BHL 1 QUT 1 v Commercial L 0-7 Our first trip out to our “home ground” proved to be a challenging outing against last years premiers Commercial. The first 20mins was excellent with great defensive strength from the boys and some fabulous saves by Blair in goals. Unfortunately, Commercial kept chipping away and eventually got one in. This sparked a mini collapse with the score at half time 6-0. The second half was again a tough contest however QUT only let in one more goal and had opportunities up the front. Overall it was a solid game with many positives coming out of it. The end score 7-0 was definatley not reflective of the game.
BHL 2 QUT 2 v Commercial D 2-2 Saturday was a real test for Division 2 – hot and humid conditions + facing last years grand finalists was a tough assignment.  Prior to the game we identified a need to pressure Commercials midfield and not allow them to dictate the flow of play.  The first 20 minutes saw Herculean defensive running from Mick Lehmann and Matt Cody, this combined with the pick-pocket tackling of Keiran prevented Commercial from establishing their traditional midfield dominance.  The Cobras were unable to find the net from the field and had to rely on their corner battery to push in front on the score board.  QUT replied in kind shortly thereafter, through an interesting corner variation that looked more like a car crash, but created enough confusion for Mick Lehmann to bat the ball into the net from close range.  Due to the heat and a lack of fitness, QUT’s bench resembled a turnstile at the Ecca and when Alex K surcumbed to a hamstring, things were looking grim.  Down 2-1 the pivotal moment arrived in the form of a brain snap from Commercials keeper – Mick Beaumont found himself in space and approaching the circle when the keeper sprinted outside the ring and performed a slide tackle with the stick and took out Mick and the ball simultaneously.  It should have been a PC, which was not awarded, but the collision with Hanks massive frame wounded the keeper to such an extent that he was forced to sit down in the back of the net whenever the game would allow.  Consequently, Hank was able to take advantage of his lack of mobility and slip a field goal past him in the 49th minute, 2-2.  The last 18 or so minutes was purely a battle of stamina and intestinal fortitude, and despite a passage of play where the ball was treated like a hand grenade, Millsy, Kieran and Princess were able to re-establish possession and the IBIS dominated the last 5 minutes.  Unfortunately the 3rd goal didn’t arrive, but the draw was a fair reward for a team that had clearly extended themselves.  The desperation to come away with points was demonstrated in the passionate defence provided by Millsy, who sacrificed himself with a yellow card late in the game to shutdown a promising Commerical raid.  Outstanding effort from every guy in the team!!
BHL 3 QUT 3 v Commercial L 0-2 A hot day made the tough task of playing the 2009 Premier’s even tougher, but the boys went out ready for a tough battle. Commercial controlled the majority of the ball throughout the game but could not manage to penetrate the QUT defence for the first 20 minutes. A lapse in defence led to the first Commercial goal, which resulted in the QUT boys becoming more determined and creating some good opportunities but failing to convert. The second half saw QUT control the ball a bit better and play with more composure, creating more opportunities to score but still unable to finish. A goal against the run of play saw of any chance of a QUT comeback. A 2-0 loss but the boys played well against the 2009 Premiers, and are ready to get back in the winners circle next week.
BHL 4 QUT 4 v Commercial L 0-11 QUT went up against Commercial this weekend and last minute player drop-outs left the team under strength. The game started well but an injury in the first five minutes allowed Commercial to score some goals with only 10 players on the field. QUT led a spirited attack and defence while one man down. Going into the break 4-0 down. The second half was one to forget as Commercial ran in 7 goals as QUT’s positioning fell apart and players were left unmarked. QUT had several chances but a lack of ball movement towards the right hand side allowed Commercial to easily defend. The team looks forward to the next match to make good on the mistakes of this match.Player of the Month: Connor Doyle

ROUND 1 – Sat 20 & Sun 21 March 2010

Division Game Result Match Report
BHL 1 QUT 1 v Labrador L 2-8 QUT started their 2010 season with a trip down to Labrador. The boys started strongly with an early goal by Issac Dawson and some strong play that caught the opposition off guard. Unfortunately Labrador wrested control of the game with two quick goals. Chris Gilmore slotted another goal in the second half however Labrador had the game held firmly.
BHL 2 QUT 2 v Labrador L 1-5 First goal of the season went to Tom Mills – unfortunately for Millsy it was a deft deflection past his own keeper.  With QUT missing several key players a young Labrador delivered the fatal wounds in the first half by capitalizing on superior fitness and speed, pressing the pace of the game to a level that we were not comfortable with.  As a result the QUT lads were forced into a lot of defensive running which in turn created a lot of fatigue induced mistakes when we had possession.   Impressive scrambling in defence saw a half-time score of 2-0 down, but we were clearly spent.  Improved composure over the ball in the second half saw QUT start to make in-roads down the centre of the field and Kieran neatly slotted a ball under the keeper after sneaking past the defence at the top of the circle.  At 3-1 Mr Momentum had changed address and the Labrador defence was looking wobbly.  Unfortunately a defensive lapse saw a soft goal for Labrador, which proved to be a momentum killer.  There were still several genuine goal opportunities generated, but the finishing touch proved elusive.  The 5-1 final score was not reflective of the more even nature of the second half.
BHL 3 QUT 3 v University W 4-3 A slow start to the game and some mistakes in our defensive 25 saw UQ score two early goals in the first 15 minutes. This spurred the boys into action as our midfield started to control the ball more and dictate the terms and pace of the game. This saw some great team work and ball movement over the next 10 minutes or so that led to a Penalty Stroke to Chris Grew (he obviously didn’t take lessons from his Coach at the Carnival!!) and a field goal to Luke Meakin. A frantic to finish to the half saw the goal of the match from a diving Scott Barton one timing a 50 metre cross field pass from Luke Meakin on the stroke of half time. The second half was a tough battle as fitness and a lack of patience saw QUT play into UQ hands. Good team work was again rewarded midway through the 2nd Half with Mark Masefield setting up an easy goal for Marcus Godwin. Despite a late goal to UQ, the boys were able to hold out to be deserved winners 4-3 over last year’s Grand Finalists. Great start to the season boys!!! Goal Scorers: Chris Grew, Luke Meakin, Scott Barton and Marcus Godwin
BHL 4 QUT 4 v Easts L 0-3 The game started off hard and fast with Easts running in a goal in the first ten minutes. The team did not give up though and went into half time still at 1-0. Some great commitment to the ball by John Campbell and Marcus Goodwin forced the opposition to change attack strategies. Some quick short passing opened up the field but unfortunately QUT were not able to convert any scoring opportunities. The start of the second half started just as quickly as the first half. With fatigue starting to set in and a few lapses in defence allowed Easts to score another goal. Josh Spicer made some great saves to hold out and keep Easts at 2-0 until the final 2 minutes of the match. The score line ended up at 3-0 loss but was a very impressive and strong start to the season.
