QUT and UQ Division 1 men’s teams played today for the inaugural Ben Napier-Munn Memorial Shield. UQ won 3-1, well done. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the boys, and to everyone who attended after the game at the presentation ceremony, it was very much appreciated. The game will be shown on QCTV (Briz31) on Monday night 4 May 2008 at 7pm and apparently there is footage of Rastus the River Rat Mascot plus interviews with QUT players. Photos will be up on our Facebook photos site soon. Now we just have to plan to claim the Shield next year…

SHOWDOWN
QUT VS UQ
Ben Napier-Munn Memorial Shield
Challenge Game
In what is set to be one of the biggest rounds of the season, QUT are taking on traditional rivals The Forces of Darkness (UQ) at the State Hockey Centre on Saturday, including the Ben Napier-Munn Memorial Shield Challenge Game in Division 1 at 3pm. Please attend a short presentation ceremony after the Division 1 game in the covered pavilion area between SHC field 1 and the HQ on Lytton club facilities. Ben’s parents, Professor Tim Napier-Munn and Ms Elizabeth Napier-Munn, will present the shield to the winning captain.
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and University of Queensland (UQ) hockey clubs will clash on Saturday 2 May 2009 with more to play for than the usual inter-varsity bragging rights. The clubs will play in the Brisbane Hockey League Division One for the inaugural Ben Napier-Munn Memorial Shield to honour the memory of a QUT player who tragically died playing hockey for QUT at the age of 20. Ben Napier-Munn (28-2-79 to 2-5-99) died of a cardiomyopathy heart attack in 1999 in a Brisbane Hockey League Division Three game while playing for QUT against UQ. Saturday will be the 10 year anniversary of Ben’s death. Ben’s parents, Professor Tim Napier-Munn (who incidentally is a professorial research fellow at the University of Queensland) and Ms Elizabeth Napier-Munn will present the shield to the winning team’s captain in a short ceremony after the game. “With such a devastating incident I believe it is more than appropriate to honour Ben”, said Kieran Powyer, President of the University of Queensland Hockey Club. “Ben’s death was a tragic incident which QUT Hockey will never forget. We hope that the Shield game will be a worthy contest”, said Angela Barton, President of QUT Hockey Club Inc. The teams plan to play for the Shield in the first encounter each year in the Brisbane Hockey League Division One. The QUT vs UQ game will be televised on Queensland Community TV (formerly Briz 31). QUT Hockey Club Inc thanks Ben’s parents, Brisbane Hockey Association Inc and the University of Queensland Hockey Club.
The action kicks off at 12 noon with the Div 3 men with the Div 2 team following at 1.30pm. The Division 1 “game that stops the nation” Ben Napier-Munn Memorial Shield match starts at 3pm and will be our first match that is filmed and will be televised on QCTV (Briz31).
UQ are already rallying their troops so it is VITAL that we get as many QUT supporters out there as possible on Saturday. Bring along family, friends, randoms you met in the Guild bar on Friday arvo, whomever you can get together. Please wear your QUT shirts (or cheerleading outfits for those that still have them….. ). The bar will be open and I am sure that the Newmarket will be the place of choice for a post match beverage.
See you all on Saturday
